During 2016, five grants were made. All the applications were supported by a completed application form, as preferred by the Trustees, as this provides a very basic check on the validity of the information given about the applicant’s circumstances.
A grant was also made to a local club.
The total sum of grants paid out was £1,600 of which £1000 was the grant paid to East Winch Parochial Church Council for the upkeep of East Winch Parish Church.

East Winch United Charities receives annually, a small amount of rental income from land which it owns in the Parish of East Winch.
The Charity exists to provide financial relief to individuals, or through local groups, to those in need, hardship or distress who reside within the Parish of East Winch.
At present, under the rules of the Charity, the income is split evenly between the Parish Church and those Parishioners who can demonstrate that a grant could help alleviate conditions of need, hardship and distress.
At present, and historically, the grants are distributed in December of each year, as this is the time when many people need a little extra financial help.
However, there may be circumstances at other times throughout the year when Parishioners might be in need of help. So if you're suffering from financial hardship and have to meet an unexpected expense, then the Trustees of East Winch United Charities may be able to help.

All the Trustees give their time voluntarily and none of them receive any benefits from the charity. Any expenses reclaimed are set out in the accounts. (No expenses were claimed during the report period)
Governing Document:
A scheme dated 23rd November 1981, regulated by a scheme of the Charity Commissioners of the 8th July 1913 and consisting of the following charities.
1. The Church and Town Lands Charity; (Deed in 1607; and Scheme of Charity Commissioners of 21st February 1893
Note The Charity of the Reverend Thomas Hope and, the Charity of John Morse; These charities, subsidiaries of East Winch United Charities, were wound up and removed from the Register of Charities with effect from 18th September 1995.
Objects of the Charity:
Subject to payment of expenses, under the rules of the Charity the Trustees apply the net income split evenly between East Winch Parish Church and those Parishioners who can demonstrate that a grant could help alleviate conditions of need, hardship and distress.
Public benefit:
Need hardship or distress is usually interpreted as being on State benefits. If the Charity receives any submissions from referring Agencies these are taken into account in determining whether a grant should be made. Within this context, all applicants are considered on their merit, and no one is excluded on the grounds of age, disability, race, religion or sex.
Source of Income:
East Winch United Charities receives annually, a relatively small amount of rental income from 4 parcels of land, totalling 29 acres, which it owns in the Parishes of East Winch and Middleton; part of one of these parcels of land is let as allotments with the rest being let as farmland.
Activities and Achievements:
It is of interest that the Object of the Charity is to assist those in need, hardship or distress. The provision of allotment plots, although perhaps the most publicly seen and best known side of the Charity’s activities is incidental to this, and is one of the means of obtaining money to assist the beneficiaries.
During 2015, five grants were made. All the applications were supported by a completed application form; this is preferred by the Trustees as it gives some check on the validity of the information given about the applicant’s circumstances. A grant was also made to a local club.
The total amount of grants paid out was £1,552 of which £952 was the grant paid to East Winch Parochial Church Council for the upkeep of East Winch Parish Church.
Allotments:
The Charity owns 4 parcels of land which it rents out, and the Charity's income comes solely from rents received.
Some land is let as allotments; the rents contribute to the annual sum available to help those in need. Allotments as provided by the East Winch United Charities are approximately 1000 square metres in size, or four (4) times the size of a standard allotment.
Allotment holders were informed that trustees were concerned that though some allotments are being maintained to a high standard, concern remain that some are not being maintained to a reasonable standard, with some allotments no being cropped. Whilst the charity continues to receive income this situation is not seen as a priority to resolve; the trustees recognise that the condition of vacant allotments deters potential holders from taking on such allotments.
The Trustees of the Charity recognise they are obliged to seek the best income possible from their investments in line with this they took an in depth review of the allotments. Actions agreed are listed below. Prior to implementing agreed actions, the trustees met with allotment holders to try to reach a consensus.
· A new tenancy agreement for the allotments was issued, this agreement moved rents from operating one year in arrears to being one year in advance.
· The trustees increased the annual rent to reflect what could be achieved by renting out the allotments as farm land.
· The trustees also agreed to increase the rent for 2017.
· The trustees agreed to take out an insurance policy covering the allotments.

THE CHARITIES. – A meeting of the trustees of the Church and Town Lands Charity took place on Thursday for the purpose of collecting allotments rent and the letting of two plots vacated at Michaelmas. Subsequently three members, joined by the secretary of the parish coal club, received and considered tenders for the supply of coal at Christmas and that of Messrs Coller and Sons for South Normanton cobbles was accepted.
